Rough Acceleration

Been having a problem with my 900. It's an '85, 8 valve no turbo. Engine
running rough at high(er) RPMs.

For the most part it runs smoothly, but on acceleration (toward 4000+
RPM) there is an all-of-a-sudden significant power loss and it sounds
like one of the cylinders is firing out of sync. When this starts, it
doesn't stop without letting off of the gas pedal. At worst case this
has started as low as 2500 RPM and can make the whole engine really
shudder.

Also, about this time, there seems to be a lot of backfiring if I
downshift toward a stop. I think this is why I've now got a new hole in
the front exhaust pipe. (or is it the other way around?)

I've replaced ignition plugs & wires, distributor cap & rotor, and set
the timing. It was high (25 deg.), I brought it back to 22, then 17.
Still no change. Next I'll check the fuel filter and the ignition coil,
but I'm fast running out of ideas.

Could a soon-to-be-failing fuel pump cause this? What about fuel mix?
(haven't noticed discouloured exhaust...)&(old plugs looked fine).

Aside from the rumble from the new hole in the front pipe, at lower RPM
ranges, you wouldn't know there was a problem (except for the
backfiring).

Suggestions as to what else I can check would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
-chris
