Annoying rattling sounds from the proper area.

I think most of what people know about cars is through personal
experience, so if you've never had the problem, it's not likely that
you'll know about it. So... no, that doesn't sound dumb.

> Do they just 'GO BAD' or do they make noise.......

NOISE. It gets louder as they get warmer. It loudens when you turn the
wheels to that side. It get increasingly loud as you drive on and wear
them down... until you replace the bloody things....

The only short-term solution is to turn up the stereo.

IIRC, it takes about an hour. Parts are something like CD$340. YMMV.
SUPERMECHANIC, himself, Rob Bedwell, does all this stuff for my Beloved,
and he operates at SUPERSPEED; for a mere mortal, things may take a bit
longer.

Woo! Nice collection, Stephen!

In my experience a bad wheel bearing will make an odd rubbing or grinding
sound which you can either change in pitch or make disappear completely
(momentarily) by turning the wheel slightly one way or the other. When one
of my bearings went bad, it made the noise going straight ahead, but if I
would turn the wheel slightly left, the noise would go away completely
until I straightened out again.

The job isn't terribly difficult to do yourself, although getting that big
nut off can be a chore, not to mention getting it torqued back to specs. I
took everything apart myself and had a machine shop press in the new
bearings. As I recall, the bearings were about $30.00 apiece, and I think
the shopped charged me about the same amount each for pressing them in.
Add to that at least an hour's labor for getting it apart and back
together; maybe more. (I never know how long it takes a REAL mechanic to
do a job on a Saab - it seems like anything I do myself lasts a LOT longer
than it should!)

If you're speaking of Taliafero as your Saab shop, he's good! I highly
recommend him!

Good luck
