Odometer & Fuel Gauge

Re: 1984 C900 Turbo

When we first got this car from my folks, we were told to ignore the fuel
guage because it didn't work anyway and just use the trip-meter to guage
when we needed to get fuel... The fuel guage 'sticks' at somewhere around
1/2 to 1/4 tank - I know with some American cars (my AMC, for example),
one can simple remove the sending-unit from the tank, clean it off real
well, then stick it back in - can the same be done to a Saab
sending-unit?? If so, where is it??

Recently though, both the odometer and trip-meter decided to quit working
all the time - they work intermittantly - as my wife puts it; 'It depends
on what mood the car is in - sometimes I'll start it and the odometer
works fine - other times, I'll start it and the odometer won't work...'
The speedo seems to work fine... This is frustrating as we no longer have
any real way of knowing how much fuel is in the tank without shaking the
car and listening to the 'slosh'... It just seems a little odd to me
that the speedo will work fine but the odometer/trip-meter don't - aren't
they interconnected somehow via some gearing???

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!
