Re: New Clutch or Not & Double Clutching

I had a 1952 VW beetle from Germany that had NO synchromesh on any gear, it
was built that way. Double declutching was essential, other wise you
couldn't change down to a lower gear. The idea is getting the bit of the
gearbox that will have to mesh to be spinning at the same speed, hence the
idea of engaging the clutch briefly with a throttle blip to get the free
bits spinning, then slip the gears in and if you get it right you change
gear, if not you make an awfull noise! I also had an MG Y-type with no
synchro on bottom gear, so necessary again.
With some production gearboxes on 60's and 70's cars you could beat
the synchromesh by double declutching, but as designs improved it became
unlikely unless the synchomesh was clapped out. With modern European cars
(the only ones I drive with manual gearboxes) I can no longer beat the
synchomesh and any way the synchro is so good that it is almost impossible
to tell. It covers up your misses!
Conclusion, put your concentration into doing the changes at exactly the
righ point for the effect you want.
Mike.
