99 Alternator & Regulator Diagnosis

My indicator light came on my 99 yesterday. A check with a meter shows
less than 12volts output at idle, it comes up some at highway speeds. A
couple of questions:

1) does the 78 '99 have an outboard regulator ? if so where is it ? I
have a Bosch not an SEV alternator.

2) Before this happened the light would come on, i would give it a quick
rev, it would go out and stay out. Is this an indication of something ?

3) Are there any tinkerers out there who have replaced the diodes in a
Bosch KV-20 alternator ? If so any hints or tips would be
appreciated. Thanks, Dave
