I must take exception to the statement that the classic 900 is the best
SAAB ever built. Mark down my vote for the 9000 CS. I am very familiar
with Saab's having purchased and thus owned 24 new SAAB's. I currently own
an '86 900S that I dearly LOVE...no SAAB, in my opinion, matches the old
900's for that precious Saabism of CHARACTER. The 9000 CS, however, still
exudes plenty of the SAAB character, but it does so in a package that has
better space utilization, better road manners, and more/better creature
comforts. I personally decided to purchase an example of the last of LPT
9000's, a '97 CS, because I knew the upcoming 9-5 was not to have a hatch.
To me, the utilitarian value of a hatchback in a SAAB is not to be missed.
I know SAAB had to give up the hatch in the 9-5 for commercial appeal which
SAAB needs in order to survive the marketplace. I have driven a few 9-5's
fast on the open road, and their adeptness here is great. In my humble
opinion, any increase in open road smoothness and quietness of the 9-5 does
not make up for the lack of the utilitarian value of the 9000 CS's hatch.
Of course there is the 9-5 Wagon, which has even more utilitarian value,
but you have to not mind a wagon. I think I could learn to love one of
those, too. I have grown to love every SAAB that has come down the pike,
which is why I am offering my opinion and comments. Which ever SAAB you
own, your loyalty to the marque and enjoyment of that ingratiating SAAB
CHARACTER is what counts!! Happy 'Saabing'!!
