Fuel Pump Leak
Posted by jfrancis - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em= (more from jfrancis - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=) on Mon, 19 Apr 2004 09:01:28

I have a 1990 base 900 I'm having a continual problem with. It started
out as a smell of gas in the cabin. On tracing it down, I discovered
raw fuel sitting in a puddle on top of the fuel pump. The plastic tubes
that the check valve fittings go into were also full of fuel, so I
assumed the fittings probably needed new O-rings. I pulled them out,
promptly breaking them in the process. A long story later, I finally
had new fittings and O-rings in place, and no more fuel coming out of
the tubes. I still had gas puddling on top of the fuel pump, though. I
pulled the pump (breaking the plastic fittings once again - there must
be a better way of getting those things out than just grabbing them with
pliers and pulling!) and replaced the big O-ring underneath it. Got
everything back together, and still have leaks. The fittings are still
dry, so the gas must be coming up around the fuel pump and that big
collar that holds it in. I have the collar as tight as I can get it
with my homemade tool. Of course, there's a special Saab tool for doing
it right. My questions are: 1) Has anyone else had problems with
this, and would you like to share your solutions? 2)Does anyone know
where I could buy/rent the special tool for tightening the collar on the
fuel pump? And 3) What's the approved way for getting those silly
plastic check-valve fittings out of the fuel pump without breaking them?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

John Francis
