Influencing Purchase

A guy I know just totalled his Neon. He's looking for a replacement. He
wants to spend somewhere aroound the mid-20s (US $).
I'm thinking that the 9-3 might do. A liitle more expensive than the target
price, but within range.
So..... How to convince him.

My questions:
I looked at the specs on the 9-3, and:
Is the hatchback area as large as my '86 900? I
have slept back there, by myself comfortably (I'm
5'11'), and with a guest semi-confortably.
So, can you get a 2x4x8' in the hatch and close
it on a 9-3?
Is the lip of the hatch still low, so that you
can lift various home appliances directly in over
the bumper?
Is the stowage compartment under the hatch still
there? Still large enough to hold a decent sized
portable garage (I've got 4 qts oil, 100' cable
with come-along, REAL lug-wrench, pipe wrench,
3# mallet, hammer, folding snow shovel, trouble
light, english+metric socket sets, air pump, plus
other goodies in my 900).

What engine does it use?
I understand that GM has its tentacles into Saab
deeply, and that the engine is a warmed over (euro-something
, I've heard Opel, etc).
Are the suspensions on Saabs now McPherson struts?
IMHO, a curse on Mr McPherson. Is that true for
both the 9-3 AND 9-5?
What ignition system? I've not heard too many good
things about the cassette (direct) ignition.

That's all I can think of off'en the top o'
my head, any other selling points?
BTW, since I'm also in the market, sometime,
but not immediately, any comemnts on the 9-5 wagon
(including Aero) would be appreciated, both the
yin and yang.
