Rear Noise & Check Engine Light

I bought a low-mileage (35K) 1990 900s last year.  Soon thereafter I
noticed it started to ride rather rough in back.  When I took it in for a
maintenance check-up I asked the mechanic to also check the shocks and
bushings (the place deals with American cars and Volvos - not SAABs
unfortunately).  He told me to replace the front bushings, which I did, but
he said all checked-out in the back.  Now months later I am frequently
plagued by a heavy thumping/clunking sound in back when going over bumps (a
dull but shaking ba-bum), and a persistent rattle in the back hatch area
(hatch door or some other source).  The sounds are not so bad at higher
speeds, but are really prominent between 25-45 mph even over the smallest
of bumps.  As I usually have to drive on worn old city roads at these
speeds, these sounds resonating in the cabin are driving me nuts.  I have
examined the back area myself (including spare tire well) wihout noticing
anything obviously out-of-whack, although I admit not to know exactly what
all to look for.  Any advice?

Also, my 'check engine' light has been coming on/off.  Sometimes it stays
on, other times it will remain off for a few days.  I just had my O2 sensor
replaced, so I am stumped as to why this light still is giving me problems.
I am not blessed with local SAAB expertise, so could really use some
advice.  Any idea what's going on with my SAAB?! Input would be greatly
appreciated!
