You're digging too deeply. The crank arm is beneath the plastic trim panel
under the wipers - behind what's called the 'false bulkhead', but outside
all the HVAC workings, to the right (car's right). The broken end of the
crank arm is fastened to a rod which is attached to a stepper motor.

The HVAC mechanism is identical, whether manual controls or ACC is
installed in the car, so imagine a cable from the control area snaking
around to the crank arm.

The metal repair part for the crank arm is only half of the repair. The
other half is a rubber bumper installed to prevent the stepper motor from
'over driving' the heater control. You need to pull out the ACC control
box to correctly place the bumper.
