FM Reception

I'm getting a very weak FM signal from my current stock antenna mast, antenna
base, coax cable system. The car is an '82 900 4dr. I live in the country
about 60 miles from DC. When I am close to DC the signal is strong enough
and my reception is OK. My other Saabs pick up the weak signal in the
country.

How can I tell which of these three components is the culprit? Tried the
antenna from my '83 900 with the same poor result. Concocted an FM antenna
from scratch and plugged that in. Reception improved. I suspect the antenna
base or the coax cable, but after years of working on cars I've finally
admitted to myself that diagnosis is not my strongest skill. I'd appreciate
some ideas.

Thanks

Alan
