Re: Inner Driver Swap

my best guess is that the inner driver cups are the same for the 5-speed as
for the automatic, from '87 onwards. I cannot guarrantee that this is the
case. I am almost positive that the axles are the same in 5-speeds and
autos, '87 and up, but remember that the left-hand axle is shorter that the
right-hand one. The outer CV joints may not be identical, but are
dimensionally the same. I think it was in late-'87 that they changed the
outer axle nut that goes on the outer shaft of the CV.

What I would do is to keep the inner drivers in the 5-speed tranny, and keep
the axles from from the car that ran with that tranny. I don't like to
loosen the outer CV/axle nut, and prefer to pull axles out of the CV's so
that I can leave the CV's in the car. It's a tricky and greasy
circlip-opening-and-holding exercise, but it beats getting the full-turn
backup CV-slide-grind, or ruining a wheel bearing when you put the weight of
the front of the car down of the front wheels without the presence of outer
CV joints tightly bolted in the hubs.

In your case, it is very likely that the two cars have fully-compatible
driveshafts - CVs, axles and inner drivers included.

Best regards,

David Prantl
