That might be your problem.

The common misconception: 'An extra half-turn can't hurt' can cause all sort
of failures. If you don't have a torque wrench and a torque spec for the
bolt, 'as tight as I dared' is a formula for failure. 'Finfer tight plus a
half' is a good measure, if you have no other; applicable to common,
low-stress applications.

You don't want it to be clean. Wipe on a layer of oil on all surfaces
before assembly. This is also applicable to your oil filter, you should wipr
on a layer of oil on the gasket before tightening it. I use a layer of
grease.
