Ball Joint and Wheel Bearing

I'm new to the list and a new owner of a base model 89
900. The car was given to me by my brother with some
problems...namely two bad wheel bearings and a leaking
steering rack. I'm so glad to find a forum on these
cars because they are different, indeed!

Anyways, I've read the archives and understand the
procedure for a front wheel bearing replacement (I've
done a few bearings on other FWD cars before too) with
thanks especially to the guys at Townsend Imports.

Now to my question:

I would like to disconnect the spindle from the top
A-arm by removing the the two bolts (attaching the
ball joint to the A-arm) because separating the tie
rod was enough banging around and I don't want to deal
with separating the ball joint from the spindle.

It seems that the coil spring saddle is also attached
by these same two bolts...but I can't tell since
there's 200K miles of crud.

Can I remove these two bolts to free the upper ball
joint while the spring is loaded (by spacers under
A-arm), or will I be calling 911 after the spring
unloads? Would I have to obtain a spring compressor
to do the job?

The bottom ball joint seems easy enough.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tom Kim
