Re: Painting Bumpers

Do: a very good prep job, with fine (400 or higher) sandpaper/emery
cloth. Otherwise, the rougher stuff will show through, as the bumper
surface is somewhat soft. How do I know this? Oh well, the car sold
anyway! I would do a large area to ensure an even finish.

Don't: expect a perfect color match. About the only stuff available at
the time I did my 87 was Gray Bumper Paint, put out by Duplicolor. Make
sure it says 'flexible' on the can! It had a picture of a Taurus on the
can, which it apparently was designed for. My 'helpful' Saab parts
counter guy recommended this.

I painted the bumpers on my 91 900S. As with any painting, the prep work is
the most important part.

1. remove them from the car.

2. set up saw horses to paint them on.

3. clean dirt off and sand them.

4. sand all the rough spots/nicks and scrapes REALLY well.

5. cover with flexible primer

6. give a few good light coats of matching paint. I just picked a color at
Pep Boys that came close. It was a Honda color, I recall (charcoal). Sorry
no ID number. Wurth makes a color that matches well too. Ideally you'd find
a flexible paint that matched, I didn't bother.

7. If you want, buff them after a couple of days or go over them with a fine
fine sandpaper (2000+ grit) and then buff. I didn't bother, not quite that
picky, and also not worth messing up the paint.

Have fun. Prep work is the most critical part, don't forget.
