Noises & Valve Cover Leak & 8V Performance

Well, after replacing my fuel pump, fuel distributor, O2 sensor, and
fuel filter, my old '81 Saab 900S seems to be running quite well. I'm
noticing better cold weather starts, and smoother cold idle. I'm still
hearing that metallic gurgling sound from the gas tank area after I turn
the car off, and I really don't know what to make of that. It seems to
occur after every shut down, regardless of temperature, or length of
running. Only things that I can think of are; plugged tank vent
(although it still does it with the gas cap removed), bad fuel
accumulator, or something in the muffler rattling. Anyone have any bets
on these or other ideas?
I finally got my sunroof open, and am looking for a source for a new
gasket to end my leakage problem. The old gasket doesn't seem to be torn
or anything, but I wonder if it hasn't shrunk with age, as there seems
to be a gap between the movable roof section and the rest of the roof.
Any thoughts on a new gasket, or things to watch out for during the
replacement would be appreciated.
I seem to have acquired a strange squeaking noise from the engine
compartment. I seem to hear it most from near the firewall on the
passenger side. At first I thought it was one of the accessories like
water pump, or alt. or PS (I do have a BAD PS leak), but the sound does
not seem to be affected by RPM. I am wondering if it could be noisy fuel
injectors. I remember when I had them out for testing, they seemed to be
really noisy. Any thoughts? Could it be the timing chain?
Speaking of the timing chain, is this a replacement that could be
accomplished without removing the engine? Is it something that could be
accomplished without a lot of specialized tools?
I've noticed a leak in the valve cover. Is replacing this gasket
difficult? Speaking with the original owner, he stated that he had to
replace a broken valve spring sometime in the late '80's. With
approximately 250 k miles, I am wondering if it would be beneficial to
adjust the valves. A mechanic told me that he thought the ticking noise
from the valve cover area indicated that the valves needed adjustment,
but he is a 'Cooter' type, not a true Saab mechanic (not that I am
either! lol). Any thoughts or pitfall regarding this procedure?
I note a posting on shocks. I replaced mine with NAPA shocks, and I
think my ride is more harsh as well. I believe my shocks were made in
Belgium. Or was that the muffler? Can't remember.
I'd like a little more power out of my old 8 valve. Any sources for
performance parts like a header or something for this engine? I see lots
of old Saabs with spoilers, and bras and such. Is there a company for
these items to look for?
Sorry for the long post. Feel free to reply to list or my e-mail.
Happy Motoring!
