Ball Joint

Hi. I have a 91 Saab 900s and I believe the ball joint on the front driver
side is shot. I took the wheel off and the boot is ripped bad. I am going to
try to fix it myself and I have a few questions. First, the special spacer
tool that is in the Bentley manual: Does anyone know how thick it is or if I
can use something besides this tool to insert between the upper control arm
and body? Second, if you are only fixing the top ball joint do you need to
remove the shock? Third question: The Spacer Press Tool: is there something
that I could use instead of this tool or is it possible to rent this tool
from an auto parts store like AutoZone? (is it absolutely necessary to use
the special tool or can I use any generic separator fork?)

Thank you.

Shannon
