Using the oil-pressure warning light (otherwise known as an *idiot* light)
is not a very good way of diagnosing oil pressure problems, especially on a
rather old car like an '86 9kT.

Two 9k cars in my family have had a failed pressure sensor within the last
six months. Both failures included a false-on signal, either consistently
or randomly, with and without oil leakage.

I would recommend replacing this sensor. It's made in England, and here in
the USA it costs less than four dollars.

The next thing your friend should probably do is hook up a calibrated (or at
least graduated) oil pressure gauge to the car, and monitor the pressure
during very cold startup.

Hmm. To change the pickup tube seal (o-ring), the whole timing cover must
be removed from the engine. That's a rather large undertaking, usually only
done to access and replace timing chain components. Removing the oil pan is
not a whole lot more work at that point.

During the service pressurized air was blown
throught the oil pickup tube. The problem still exists.

This would be a logical step, and, no, the pan must be removed.
