Re: Radio Install

I just installed a Blaupunkt radio in my 1991 9000T, replacing the clarion
radio/cassette and equalizer; here are my answers to your questions:
- There is no need to remove any facia parts. The radio and equalizer slide
out using the DIN removal tool that came with the car and is available from
most WalMart stores for about $4. After that, the cage that holds each of
these needs to be pulled out. There are tabs that hold them to the
dashboard. Release the tabs and they will just pull out the front.
- I hate cutting the factory wiring harness, and Crutchfield included a
mating connector with my radio purchase. You can buy it separately for $9
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-8fuvha59YoO/ProdView.asp?s=0&cc=01&c=11&g=103000&I=120701739+.

It works with MY86 and up Saabs, but I believe it only works with Clarion
equipped models, not the newer Harmon-Kardon systems. I haven't seen any
other source for this connector.
- If your radio has RCA connectors, that is probably for an external power
amplifier which you might not have. Mine was on the back of the radio cage,
so it was removed with the radio. Some radios don't use an amplifier at all.
Speaker connections are usually just bare wires that are connected with wire
nuts, soldered or crimped. On my Saab, there was a separate wiring harness
connector just for the speakers. If you want/need to use the RCA connectors,
then you probably will have to buy an external amplifier (they often cost as
much as the radio) and bypass all the existing speaker wires and run your
own.
- The non-fading connection is for a center channel speaker. 9000's don't
have that, so you won't use that. The problem you will have is that you now
have two connections, but four speakers. Unless you have four pairs of
actual speaker wires, you will have to buy and wire in an external fader if
you want to be able to control front to rear speaker balance.
- The Saab dashboard is strong enough to support the radio from the front,
assuming that the radio is a standard DIN mount (which it appears to be), the
mounting system that came with the radio should be sufficient.
- Saabs leave the panel lights on all the time, so connecting this wire is
optional. If you do connect it, you are correct about it being the
brown/white wire.
