Re: 9-3 Manual Transmission

I wrote once before when I picked up my '99 9-3 coupe. So far, the car has
been great and I like it much more than my previous '95 900s coupe. The
build quality and features are quite an improvement.

Hmmm...not sure I agree. I have found the only thing that's better about
my new '99 9-3 vs. my '96 900 is the fact that the 9-3 has the turbo and
hence, has more 'get up and go.'

However, I would like some feedback on a recent problem. Every so often,
when I put the car in reverse, the gearbox will grind. I seem to remember
another person on the list having this problem and having the transmission
replaced. (BTW, I have the 5-speed) This morning, something strange
happened. I turned the car on and could not get it out of reverse. I
finally smacked the shifter and it popped out and I did not have the
problem again. On the forward gears, I have noticed that this gearbox is a
little more stodgy than my '95 and sometimes it will refuse a gear unless I
am extremely precise. TO the person who had a replacement already, I
would be interested in a more detailed description of the symptoms and I
would also be interested in hearing the comments of anyone else who has
this problem with their 9-3. I am taking the car in next Tuesday for a
quick check, so we will see.

Well, I don't like the new gearbox at all. It's 'notchy' and I have had it
grind when downshifting into 3rd gear on several occasions. At first I
thought it might be my technique, but over time I concluded that it was
not. My suspicions were confirmed when I had a friend visit me recently.
He is a very accomplished driver, has driven nothing but standard
transmission autos for as long as he's had his license AND he has his CDL.
That is, in his job capacity he drives large trucks (also all standard
transmissions). While he was driving my car, the gears ground once and he
looked at me in total disbelief. Grinding gears is something neither of us
do and he couldn't believe that he had done it. His words to me right
after it happened and he was staring at me were 'What the H*LL is that!!'
I explained to him that I had been having the same problem on and off. I
think I'm going to have to have it checked out...

Also, my sunroof leaks water intermittently. I have gone to great lengths
to insure that it's not partially open or something and that the drains are
clear. Sometimes after it rains I get in my car and drive out of work.
Before I pull out onto the street, there is a downward slope. When I pull
to the street and come to a stop to wait for an opening in the traffic, I
get SOAKED with water dripping from the left front corner of the sunroof.
I have had it into the dealer and they said they resealed it. I think it's
going to be more complicated than that to fix...
