Personally, I haven't had any problems in a 99 in the summer. That
air scoop at the base of the windshield brings in a lot of airflow.
Couple that with leaving the rear side windows open, and the
ventilation is quite good.

The 99 A/C systems were always hack. Even the Dealer installed items.
They were never fully integrated with the climate control (unlike the
C900 & later Saabs). The controls were two knobs that were mounted
either side of the rear window defog switch, the vents were this
really cheap plastic that went on the bottom of the dash (removing
the nice flat panels, the rounded lip, and the grab handle) which
never, ever fit properly. Fitting a radio was an adventure.

The compressor typically used was the venerable York. Compact was not
it's middle name. Some, though, have attempted to use smaller
compressors. Access to the #1 spark plug is not easy. Valvetrain work
sometimes requires removing some A/C components.

To get the refrigerant between the components, a couple large holes
are drilled in the top of the firewall shelf. The evaporator is
mounted underneath this shelf on the passenger compartment side.

I don't think that R-134a can be used in these systems. Using R-12 is
expensive today. Personally, I won't do any major A/C work on my
C900s without switching to R-134.

Most people I know trash the 99 A/C systems. If I haven't discouraged
you yet, you may find someone offering a setup for free.
