Loss of Coolant and Burning Smell
Posted by rawhead - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=1 (more from rawhead - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=1) on Thu, 29 Jan 2004 22:56:30

I've been noticing a slight loss of coolant. I noticed the other day when it
snowed like crazy and I was trying to get the car out of my driveway that it
seems as though when I rev the engine (perhaps when the turbo kicks in),
there is some leakage of the coolant (noticed the yellow-greenish liquid on
the very white snow, right in the middle--i.e., I think right below where the
engine is).

Then it hit me that I've been noticing a slight 'burning' smell when the RPM
goes high (or when the turbo kicks in?) while driving. I thought that there
may be some internal leakage and so I took the car to the mechanic, prepared
for the worst (turbo replacement? headgasket?).

To my surprise (I guess in a good way), the mechanic after 'thoroughly
testing the engine and the turbo' swore there was nothing wrong with either,
and the car came back without alteration. This mechanic is a SAAB/Volvo
specialist and seems to be fairly reliable. He however did not have any
explanation for the, admittedly slow, coolant leakage (roughly, half a
tank/month).

I guess I just wanted a second opinion. Can anyone tell me what might be
wrong (or, alternatively, reaffirm that I have little to worry about)? I'm
scheduled to go on a fairly important road trip this spring
(Boston<->Toronto) and want to feel fairly secure that I won't have to worry
about a multi-hundred mile tow during the trip ;-p

The car is a '95 SAAB 9000CS with 182k but with a 95 Aero engine in it with
less than 90k (swapped in fall 2002).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
