By 'marked salvage' the insurance company means that they will only pay
you the book value because they say that number is less than the fix-up
cost. You can keep the car, in which case you pay the insurance company
the scrap value of the car, so your net is book value less scrap value.

There are a number of used car pricing services available on the net
(and in your local library). You didn't give enough details in your
message for a definitive price, but a quick check of Kelley Blue Book
says that in Philadelphia, an 87 9000S with auto and 186000 miles has a
retail value of $3,050, although the trade-in price for the same car in
'excellent' condition is only $1,175.

Show a collection of the 'retail' values from several such sources to
your insurance company and see if you can get more than $2000.
