Our 1987 900S had a strange 'thunk' noise from the rear when it was young.
I was able to locate it: there is a long diagonal link that keeps the rear
axle fixed from side-to-side movement. It bolts from one side (driver's?
it's been a while!) of the axle and goes to the opposite side of the car,
and connects to the chassis. You'll probably have to jack the car up to
see/place your hands on it. Make sure you support the car on a jack stand
or other means before lying beneath it! Shaking it vigorously revealed a
small amount of slop. The bushing nuts were slightly loose. Get a large
breaker bar and tighten the two large mounting nuts.
