Re: Power Antenna

These antennas fail when the cogged plastic 'tail' inside the hollow metal
mast snaps in one or more places. The tail and mast are one unitized
assembly and are not available separately.

To change a failed mast, it is very often necessary to remove the whole
motor unit from the car, open it up, and remove the bit(s) of broken plastic
tail from the spool inside. Cleaning and re-greasing the internal moving
parts is a good idea before you put the motor unit back together.

Now you're ready to feed in the new mast - tail first. I like to do this
before putting the whole thing back in the car, by connecting the 2-wire
connector, a jumper lead between the motor body and ground, and then getting
a helper to turn the radio on/off to get the motor running. It takes some
fiddling to get the tail to catch in the spool if you haven't done it
before. After it catches, it probably won't pull the mast all the way in.
So, turn the radio on again and restrict the antenna from going all the way
out (without bending or breaking it). Then turn the radio off, and it
should pull the mast in all the way. Then install the assembly into the
car.

The mast for your car is listed at http://www.townsendimports.com
as:

0252957OE
ANTENNA MAST SAAB 9000 CS 93-, CD 95 -
$28

What I cannot understand is this:

The '86-'92 9k and classic 900 cars have an antenna unit that's identical to
the '93 and later 9k cars, except for the mast. The earlier design uses 5
segments, making for an overall thicker/sturdier antenna, while the new
style has just 4 segments. Overall length is nearly identical. When I did
the '93, I had an early-style mast ready to go, but being thicker, it didn't
fit into the mast receiver tube on the '93 motor unit. I successfully
drilled this out using a 25/64' drill bit from Home Depot, so now I'm
probably the only one with an all-SAAB 5-segment '93CSE antenna.

BTW, Townsend sells the old-style black mast for about $15. Radio Shack
sells a generic power-antenna unit that is pretty much identical to the SAAB
specific units, save for the universal-angle top-body mount and chrome mast.
Their price is $38. So, if your motor is dead as well as the mast, use a
new motor from Radio Shack, new mast from Townsend, and the old mast-tube
and mounting hardware from the dead unit. Or visit the junkyard for a
working motor.
