Re: CV Boot & Shaft & Joint Replacement

I've been under the impression that the progression from clicking CV Joints
to catastrophic failure is slow. I've always believed that the concern
over catastrophic failure is only after the joint starts clicking while
travelling straight ahead, not just in turns.

I've got an '88 9000S with 185K and one clicking CV Joint. It clicks only
when moving away from a stop while turning away from the 'bad' joint. The
clicking has barely gotten any louder or more apparent in the past few
months, so I have not been too concerned. Is it critical that CV's be
replaced at the first sound of clicking? Am I risking catastrophic failure
of the joint.

Yes, I like to keep my cars in excellent mechanical condition, I just
prefer to do it at reasonable temperatures.

Thanks,

Jack Brooks
