Re: GM to Take Sole Ownership of Saab

My head tells me this is good for Saab, it needed the cash, but my heart
says it's bad. I can see it now, Saab platforms will be nothing more than
a badge engineered Ponitiac/Buick/Chevy/Opel/Vauxhaul alphabet soup. It's
already happened with the floorpan. There was talk of discontinuing the
basic 4 engine it had so-well perfected and using the GM 4. Ugh! Just
give me that Chevy Cavalier. May still happen in the name of cost
reduction...

It took me a while to go to the NG900. I'll really be hard pressed to buy
one for a while. Just need to wait and see if the company/brand gets so
absorbed into the fold it's 'quirky Saabiness' is lost. That was one of
the reasons I got into the car back in the '70's in the first place. There
was virually nothing like them. Performance per $, utility without being a
sport-utiltity, safety and uniqueness were its selling points.

At the risk of attracting flames, I guess this resolves the Monte Carlo/9-5
issue. Whatever you get its all GM. GM's styling department has left me
cold over the past couple of years. Styling on the 9-3/9-5 has kind of
left me cold as well. I find the bumper changes contrived and the
switch-gear and dashboard in the loaner I recently drove felt like
GM-rental-car cheap.

I've been driving Saabs for over 20 years now. Hate to say it, but I doubt
I'd buy a new one, at least for a while anyway. Just keep my 'S going as
long as I can I guess...

Regards,
Jim Miller
