Seatbelt Repairs

A few tips for replacing automatic seatbelts with manual ones:

The automatic seatbelt mechanism is not difficult to remove. You need
to take off the trim which surrounds the door window and the panel next
to the rear seat.

Although the frame of the car has the mounting points for the manual
seatbelts, the trim is different. The panel next to the back seat can
be modified by cutting a slot in it and then screwing the plastic belt
pass through piece onto it, or just get the panel along with the
seatbelts. If you choose the cheap route, be sure to measure where to
cut the slot for the belt pass through. The result looks very close to
stock.

The trim piece which surrounds the window and covers the automatic
seatbelt track is different. I have heard that the trim piece for a car
with manual belts is smaller, and the headliner will not come down far
enough to meet the trim. Again, you can cut a hole in the trim for the
upper belt mount. With a little care, the cosmetic results are not bad.

You don't need to remove the center console. The seatbelt reciever
between the seat and center console will be used with the new belts.
You will need to remove the seat to take out the old lap belt. The
hardest part about removing the lap belt is getting the plastic piece
where the belt passes through the seat frame out. If you are just going
to trash the old belts, you can just cut off the end of the belt to get
it out.
