This may be completely off-target, but our '88 Nissan 200SX exhibited
pretty much the same kind of symptoms a couple of months ago. Took forever
to figure out what the problem was. By the time we were done, we had
replaced the air mass meter, the O2 sensor in the exhaust system, and the
fuel pressure regulator.

Each component we had replaced had tested as faulty, but only the fuel
pressure regulator turned out to be related to the problem we were having.
When it wasn't working, it would allow the fuel pressure to skyrocket,
resulting in a far-too-rich fuel/air mixture. Of course, the other
components were also suspected of causing a too-rich mixture, but they
turned out to not be at fault.

Do I know that this is what's wrong with your car? Nope. But the symptoms
are suspiciously similar: starts fine provided the car has been sitting
long enough; no start at all when the problem comes up; when the car is
finally started, it runs just fine, without stalling, hesitation, or other
symptoms.
