Gear Shifting & Seat Heaters

I just bought a used '92 SAAB 9000, stick shift. Unfortunately, this is
the first stick shift I've ever driven, and, to be honest, I dished out
plenty of abuse to the car while learning.

Anyway, my problem (and I don't know if its my fault, or simply because
the car's getting up there with the miles) is that I can't always get
into first gear.

When first gear *is* working, there is a distinctive 'click' when it
gets into gear... i can feel if the car is in gear based on how the
stick responds to me. BUT, there are times where either I feel
resistance, and can't get it into gear, or there is absolutely no
resistance, and the car goes directly into 3rd. I don't think I need to
explain why this is bad.

So basically, I'm getting by with first gear working sporadically by
shifting directly into 2nd. However, I would like to fix this problem as
I'm worried I'm gonna get stuck on a steep hill and not be able to move
the car. Further, it just doesn't seem like its very good for the car to
always skip first gear.

So I was wondering if anybody could offer me any advice on this. Is
there anything *I* can do to fix it (or even figure out what the problem
is)? Or will I have to bring it to a mechanic?

ALSO, when I bought the car, the driver's side seat-heater didn't work.
In fact, the dashboard switch for the driver's side doesn't even light
up. The passenger one works just fine. Any suggestions on what could be
wrong. Or what I could do to fix it?

Thanks,

-Yoni Kurland
