This is a common issue when expensive cars (not just Saabs) get old. The
market value may be low, but it is still an expensive import, with parts and
service costs to match. You need to balance the inevitable repair costs
against the cost of newer car, and pleasure and safety of a Saab (or Volvo or
BMW or Audi, etc.) against the more economical parts and service costs of a
domestic car. As for your specific needs, have you considered an '01 or '02
9-3? This would put you back several years and perhaps 100,000 km on the
age/mileage curve, move you from the 2nd year of production to the last or
next to last (with anticipated improvements in reliability and safety) and
avoid the big first year depreciation hit. It also keeps the hatchback design
you have grown accustomed to and would fit your garage as well as your
current car.

BTW, my 9-5 Wagon fits my Mother-in-law's Toronto garage with precious little
to spare - any wider, and I'd be folding the mirrors back to get in and out!
