Engine and Transmission Oil

My fiancee bought an '86 900 16V Turbo last year. Since then
I've done minor repairs and maintenance, lead by a Haynes
manual. I'm wondering though why the transmission (beneath
engine) doesn't have a dipstick. I recently changed the engine
oil to Mobil 1 synthetic, and vaguely remember reading somewhere
that the engine shared the same oil as the transmission. Since I
can't find a trannie dipstick, I'm starting to think this is
true. If that's the case, though, did I only change half the oil
to synthetic, leaving the rest to mix together and require
another oil change sooner than if all oil was synthetic? If you
couldn't tell, I'm confused! Can anyone shed some light on this
situation?? Thank-you!
