Check Engine Light and Stalling

I have a 1989 9000turbo which has developed similar but not the same
problems.

The switching of the 'check engine' light is caused by a sudden stalling of
the motor.

If I am travelling at highway speeds the cessation is momentary as the car
roll-starts itself and the 'check engine' light may sometimes stay on for a
few hours or until I next stop the motor. If I am travelling at suburban
speeds the car coasts to a stop but will always restart with no sign of
problem.

At low speeds there is also some backfiring as the motor dies.

This condition occurs usually when coming off the throttle or on a prolonged
slow deceleration and never when it is under load.

The diagnostic computer at my Saab dealer indicates either nothing in the
stored
error message section or - what they call a phantom code of 6000 or so.
So far they have been unable to suggest a remedy as the car always
restarts fine.

I cannot ascertain whether the problem is electric, electronic or fuel
related.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
