Since the '89 9000s is essentially the same as an '89 900 (ie, non-turbo &
not Trionic), the timing is controlled electronically via a crankshaft
mounted hall sensor, rather than at the distributor. The flange on the
base of the distributor (at the head) has a notch in it which should be
aligned with the interface between the valve cover & head. This means
there are only 2 ways to align it: the right way, and 180 degrees off,
which will make it fire on the exhaust stroke. If you marked the original
position before you loosened the bolt, just put it back where it was;
otherwise just align it as mentioned - you may need to clean up the flange
to see the notch, but when you find it it'll be obvious. Also, note that
neither the Haynes nor Bentley 900 manuals (not even the shop service
manuals) mention this.
