There are three plugs on that tranny. A fill plug (which you seem to have
found), a level plug, and a drain plug. There's no dipstick provision for
easy level checking, so you have to remove the level plug, and add oil
through the fill hole until it starts coming out of the level hole.

The level hole is on the left side of the rear part of the tranny case, and
requires an allen wrench (don't know what size off hand) to remove. It is
very similar to the drain plug, which is on the left side of the
differential housing, and is more easily visible from under the car.

Since you are in there, might as well drain the old oil altogether, and then
fill as described above with new oil. If you cannot get to the level plug,
just drain the old oil and add a measured quantity of new oil. The capacity
specification should be in your owner's manual.

The factory recommendation is standard (petroleum-based, non-synthetic)
10W30 motor oil, but SAAB now sells a special synthetic transmission oil for
the newer cars. Your '97 9000 might qualify as a 'newer' car. Switching to
this synthetic oil requires a flush cycle, since it does not (officially)
mix with standard motor oil. Some folks have had good results with Red-Line
MTL, which is compatible with motor oil and thus does not require a flush
cycle.

This document should prove useful for both locating the plugs and selecting
an oil. It refers to the 1997 900, but your 1997 9000 transmission is very
very similar.
