I hope you got a killer deal on the van; the ciggy smoke smell will never go
away completely.
Whenever I am looking at a car, smoker-owned is worth about half its asking
price - I dislike it that much. But enough editorializing - okay, almost
enough...
All those stinky deodorant thingies just make your car smell like a
pimpmobile at a hooker's convention - even most of the detail shop
'remedies'. I think their idea of deodorizing is REodorizing - cover up the
stinky cigarette smell with an even stinkier-smelling thing, like Vanilla
Vomit or Strawberry Stench; a favorite is Nondescript Defecation.
But seriously, something that has worked amazingly well on cars that I have
brought back from the dead is Febreeze. This stuff is the sh!t. I have used
it on cars that had sat under trees for years, full of trash, damp Pacific
Northwest coastal, and after the requisite thorough shampooing and other
surface cleaning, applying Febreeze liberally has netted miraculous results.
It works especially on musty, mildewed upholstery, but also has a positive
effect on cigarette smoke. It is a little perfumy at first, but I give the
cars plenty of airing-out time and it's quite acceptable - even pleasant.
I'm sensitive to perfumes and such things (makes me either choke or want to
barf) and Febreeze is the least noxious and most effective.
I have seen it at Costco; it's available at most mainstream stores (Target,
etc.).
