Re: Flywheel Replacement & Cracked Head

Flywheel replacement on a 9000 requires that the transmission be
removed from the vehicle. It is basically the same job as replacing
the clutch. I don't know what the 'book' labor time is, but I have
done a clutch myself in 10 hours. A used flywheel, along with a new
clutch (disc, pressure-plate, t/o bearing, slave cylinder) and a rear
crank seal would be the recommended replacement parts. I would also
put in a new shifter-linkage rubber boot (tranny-side), and put a new
tapered pin in the linkage as well. The linkage rubber block should be
crack-free and resilient, or else it should be replaced as well.

If the head is indeed cracked, a veryfied-used head could be
substituted (couple of hundred dollars?). That would take at least 4
hours of labor to swap. A new head gasket and other miscellaneous
gaskets would be required, amounting to another $100 or so.

I don't think these 2 jobs could be done at a shop for less than $1500
- total.

The car in it's present state should be worth at least $500, especially
if the body is straight, relatively rust-free, and with good paint.

Best of luck,

David Prantl
