On the 9000 CS, the 'light pressure turbo' is simply a regular turbocharged
engine, minus any of the APC plumbing, so the engine is limited to the
'worst possible case mechanical base boost.' In other words, back to 1979
turbocharger control technology. The best thing you can say about that
variant is that it is sinfully easy to convert it to an 'ordinary Saab
turbo'. The engine internals are the same, the necessary parts just bolt
right up, and you change the engine control computer.
On the 9-5 4 cylinder, the 'low pressure turbo' is and 'ordinary Saab
turbo' with the full trionic APC system, but the output is limited by the
electronics to suit the car's place in the market. It's even easier to
increase the power - one simply installs a reprogrammed engine computer.
For MY 2000 9-5s, you can even buy the upgrade box from Saab.
On the 9-5 V-6, the 'low pressure turbo' is an asymmetric system which
feeds only one bank of cylinders' exhaust to the turbine, but the
compressor supplies all power to the engine. It gives that V-6 what it
never had in normally aspirated form in the 9000 - some low rpm grunt!
There is no wastegate at all, and the system is 'self limiting'.
