Noisy Transmission

So, here's the background:  '97 900SE conv.  30k. 5sp.   Problem: 
transmission noise when decelerating while in gear.  Sounds kind of like a 
bad bearing.  Not a completely constant sound, sometimes pulses.

Dealer can't figure out whether the problem is in the clutch or the 
transmission.  If it's the clutch, they think it might be a broken spring. 
 If it's the transmission, maybe something with the final drive.  If it 
turns out to be the transmission, my extended warranty will cover it.  If 
it has something to do with the clutch, I should just live with it since 
it's not too loud and it would be really expensive.

So, they want about $1,000 just to figure out where the problem is.  I'm 
not really interested in betting $1,000+ hoping it will turn out to be the 
tranny.

Any suggestions?  (frustrated owner of a 30k mi. lemon...the service record 
of this car reads like a bad novel)
