Turbo Troubles

I have a 93 900 Turbo Comm Ed. (with the Red Box) and over the last couple
of years the car has developed an interesting problem.

When the turbo system is working correctly, which it does from time to
time, I can accelerate quickly. The boost gauge goes up to but does not
enter the Red Zone. Most other times however, the gauge goes into the Red
Zone and the engine starts to hesitate almost as if the ignition is cutting
out. (FYI -- The diaphragm on the wastegate is still good...I checked with
a vacuum gauge.) When this problem first occured, it only showed its self
in cold weather (under 45F). It now appears under any condition but only
under moderate to hard acceleration. The intermittancy of this problem
makes me believe it is electronic in nature (knock sensor) but I could use
some help/theories!!
