The oil cooler should not need replacement unless it's been holed...

The fuel pickup is the issue. Lift the floor of the trunk. On the
left side, you'll see a large round cover. Pull this up, and you'll
see the fuel pump. Disconnect the fuel line, and the electrical
connections.

Now, you'll need a 1/4 drive ratchet or spinner handle, a couple 1/4
drive extensions, either a 1/4 drive universal or 1/4 drive 'spring'
extension, and a 7mm socket.

TOward the center of the car, you'll see a small hole near the large
hole. Thread the ratchet & extensions through the hole & engage the
large hose clamp holding the fuel pump in the tank. Loosen the clamp
& remove the pump.

Set the pump aside for the moment.

Down in the bottom of the tank, there (or should be) a large white
'boat' with a big round hole in the top. The return line clips on to
this. The boat sits in a specific part of the bottom of the tank.
Make sure it's there. You'll know, it kind of 'sits' in the spot.

Ok, back to the pump: Note the pickup screen on the bottom. If it's
not there, look in the bottom of the tank...Usually, it is there.
What you want to try to do is lengthen the pump assembly. First with
the tension clamps on the short hose connecting the pickup to the
pump. If you can't expand that, then loosen the clamp holding the
rubber boot to the pump & slide the pump a little further down into
the tank.

When you install, the pickup should now slip down into the hole in the boat.

Reinstall everything. The pickup problems should be mostly solved.
The early cars are never completely free of this problem, though.

The car in question is a 1980 900. No pre pump. The pre pump was not
introduced until 1983 or 84.

And all turbo Saabs have an engine oil cooler.
