Fuel Line Check Valve

Leif's fuel pump died last week, and my mechanic said he had to
replace it with a new model pump rather than with the original (1992)
model. Since then, the car takes three or four seconds of cranking
before it fires. Before the new pump, it started right up.

Is there a check valve or the like in the fuel line or in the pump
that would keep fuel in the line when the engine is shut off? Or is
there something else the mechanic might have done to cause this
problem?

I doubt this is related, but the connection to the fuel gauge sender
was also fouled up after the repair, so the gauge typically reads
empty, then flicks up to full and back with no apparent rhyme or
reason (even if the tank isn't all the way full).

TIA for any suggestions.
