SID Replacement

A few months ago I noticed that portions of the LCD on my SID stopped
working. I have a '99 9-3 SE with the SID 2. I tried the 'foam' technique
posted on the 9-3 TSN bulletin board, but the ribbon that connects the LCD to
the circuit board detached and this repair didn't work. The car is out of
warranty. My dealer told me that they couldn't fix it and it would by $400 to
replace the unit. It sounds like this is a common problem with the SID units.
I was wondering (by show of hands) how common this problem is. I am planning
to write a letter to Saab USA. Has anyone had success getting the SID unit
replaced out of warranty?
