I had a similar experience with my 1988 9000S. Similar in that whenever I
drove in heavy wet conditions, heavy rain, slushy snow, etc., I got a very
deep exhaust sound, a vibration I could feel and a slight loss in power. I
had a brand new exhaust system and thought the dealer (lifetime warrantee)
blew the installation. As soon as it got drier out, or the revs dropped, the
noise would go away. I checked out the entire exhaust system and it was
fine. I lived with it for a few months and finally checked out the intake
system. As it turns out, the air filter (K&N) was not seated correctly. One
of the long sides was very slightly bent inward and was not seated in the
'track'.

I assume that the moisture caused the resistance of the flow of air though
the filter to increase and the little bit of air bypassing the filter began
to oscillate, right where the edge was buckled inward very slightly. This
caused the deep harmonic I heard. It sounded like a blown exhaust system.
Once I straightened out and reseated the filter I have not had a reoccurrence
yet in 6 months.

later,

Jack
