It's been awhile but, if I recall...the '86 900 has a similar hood
release to the earlier 99's. When the same thing happened on one or the
other of my 99's, I was able to just take a large screwdriver (or other
leverage device), slide it through the grill, and move the hood release
directly.

A flashlight will help you find the actual hood release mechanism. Once
you've found it, it should be a simple matter to push it the correct
direction. I wish I could be more detailed in my explanation, but it's
all a little fuzzy right now. :)
