Clutch Master Cylinder

1993 900 T16S Convertible

I recently had my car serviced by Haymill Saab in Slough, UK. They picked
my car up from my place of work and returned the car later that day. When I
started the car up and put it into first, the car leapt forward after a few
seconds. I quickly put the car into neutral and pumped the clutch. I got
pressure back and again put her into first gear. The exact same thing
happened.

I immediately called the garage but they just denied it was anything to do
with them and must be pure coincidence. I protested , so they asked me to
take the car back to them the next day. I did this and they later called me
at work with a quote for the repair. £630 ($900) to replace a leaking
Master and Slave cylinder. They also said if the clutch was low on
dismantling they would need to throw one of them in too. I refused to let
them do the work as I now doubted they were trustworthy. I booked my car
into Newbury SAAB in Berkshire, UK, and told them it had a fault with the
clutch. I left the car with them for 2 weeks whilst I was on holiday. On my
return I was presented with a bill for £168 ($240) for just a Master
Cylinder replacement. They said they checked the whole system and only
found the Master to need replacing.

My questions.

Would a Master Cylinder just stop working or would I have expected there to
have been some fading for a few weeks prior to the failure ?

Is it feasible to replace the Slave when doing the Master ?

The reasons for the questions are, I think the dealer may be trying to scam
me. My car took over 2 hours to be returned to me from the time they said
it left the dealership. This is a 20 minutes journey. I have since found
out about other bad experiences from other people about this dealer so I
need technical advice before taking my next step.

Cheers

Spencer
