99 Restoration

Just added myself to the digest after 10 years of being away -- used to
read this as a news group back in the '80's, when I had my last Saab 99.

So I've acquired a very solid but much in need of refitting 1978 99 EMS. So
far the entire engine has been removed/refitted as necessary (rod end
bearings, etc was the extent of internal engine work, left water pump in
place/intact (looked ok), replaced timing chain). Compression and power
were excellent when I got it -- and just as good now.

The engine compartment has been stripped, primed, and repainted. A late
model 5spd 900 transmission has been fitted and the car drives like any
five speed Saab 99 should :^) - hence the subject line: Saab 999

Now it's in the body shop. An all new left rear quarter is on it's way to
being fitted along with a new wheel house (w/ shock tower). Amazingly
enough, the Saab dealer in Nashua was able to order new OEM body parts for
the quarter panel and wheel house. After that, some (very) minor rust
through repair in the trunk, just before the skid plate and on either side
of the heater box. Then it's back to bare metal and a new coat of paint -
the enigmatic but original 'Charcoal Grey'. With luck, this should be
complete by Dec.

To complete the upgrade from 1978 Saab 99 to 1999 Saab 999, I've acquired
an all leather matching burgundy interior from a 90's era Saab 900S, which
is where my quest for advice begins.

Has anyone on this list had any experience with trying to outfit a '99 with
a '900 interior? As far as I can tell, the front seats will go in no
problem. The bench of the rear seat actually drops in place right now. It's
the back rest that is very different. The old back rest has cutouts for the
wheel wells whilst the leather back rest does not. Also, the mounting
hardware for the leather back rest is significantly different, including
completely different locking brackets to keep it in place. I have all of
the original backrest pieces, and none of the '900 pieces except for the
backrest itself and any HW that was part of it.

The sidepanels for driver/passenger door are near plug-n-play, but the rear
left/right inserts are quite different. I may need to re-use the orginals,
which are ok but need new plastic trim pieces (around the
ashtrays/seatbelt). Anyone got new/used good condition burgundy/red
replacements for a 1978 99 EMS or comparable?

The headliner was new when I bought and is in reasonable shape. The sunroof
is manual, but was cared for, didn't rust and the drain channels drained
the test cup of water I ran through it when I bought it.

The front right dash board cover is starting to peel back from the
windshield. I'm having the windshield (& seals) replaced and want to know
what is the best method to clean/re-glue the dash cover. It's not torn,
just wrinkled as it's pulled back from the edges of where it was originally
fitted.

Additionally, I'm looking for advice on whether it's possible to convert
the rear seatbelts from lap only to three point? I don't recall whether the
anchor points for the 3 point attach to the roof pillar or are mounted
behind the back rest.

The exterior of the car is meant to be indistinguisable from when it was
sold (save for the 999 EMS 5 speed tags). It's the interior and what's
under the hood that will be 'new'.

Things I need sources for the short term, and am not having much luck
finding on TSN, in order of priority : (finding a '99 in a northeast
junkyard is getting harder every year).

I would greatly appreciate anyone's input on the above.
I'm in central Mass.

Thanks!!!
