Sounds like you popped one of the turbo pressure hoses. Since you
were working in the radiator area, check all of the large diameter
pipes that connect the air mass meter to the turbo, the turbo to the
IC, and the IC to the throttle body. Usually one forgets to tighten
one of these, and first time you apply boost, it pops off.

It will idle just fine, because the pressure is low, but as soon as
you try for more boost (note I said try), the air flows out of the
inlet tract, and then the motor is running rich, thus black smoke.

Besides the pressure hoses, you want to check all of the rubber
grommets that connect the various vacuum lines to the inlet manifold.

They should all be this easy...
