I recently had a similar SRS problem on a 91 900. The SRS diagnostic tool
for my car is a separate little gadget about the size of a pocket
calculator - for which Saab wants over $600! Still, had I known at the
beginning what was going to happen, it would have been better to just buy
my own.

In my case it was a bad ground indication at the left front sensor. A
three-hour trip to the dealer to get that diagnosis, another trip to have
the part replaced. The light stayed off for about two days, then returned.
Another trip for diagnosis, another trip to have the replacement part
replaced. The light stayed off for a few hours, just until the service
department closed. Another trip to have them clean connections at the
computer end, and again the light came on at 5:05 PM on the freeway in
front of the dealership.

Each time the light has come on, there has been no apparent reason. Driving
smoothly down a straight level paved road, nothing electrical switching on
or off, not particularly hot or cold, nothing at all to correlate as a
possible cause. If it truly is a grounding problem one would expect it to
show up under electrical or mechanical stress, but I could never spot any.
If I had my own reset tool, I'd certainly experiment, but when the reset is
a three hour drive away that is not practical. The frustrating part is you
know that with a computer and maybe a few dollars worth of interface parts,
you could build a test tool - if you could get the required information.

I've given up and removed the bulb from the indicator light. With one
exception, who said the airbag was disabled while the light was on,
everyone else has said the system will continue to function normally even
while the light is on. (Except for whatever sensor might be bad, of
course.) Since the Saab-trained tech who did all the work agrees with the
majority who say I probably have a working SRS system and the self test is
just being over-sensitive, I'm not too worried.

Oh, on my 900 the SRS computer is a chrome-looking box directly below the
left side speaker opening in the dash. The connections are on the right
end, bottom front corner. No idea if yours might be similar. Good luck!

Loren
