I had a '94 900SE V-6 for 4 years.

94 was the first year for the NG 900. There were several recalls and service
bulletins, so check that all were incorporated. The most severe, IIRC, was a
front suspension mod to reduce/control high-speed (>60 mph) shimmy. Make sure
the car is steady at freeway speeds.

The V-6 introduced that year was a controversial engine. it has a timing belt
instead of a timing chain, and the service life is only 30,000 miles. Saab
will pay for the replacement up to 90,000 miles, but then you're on your own.
It was a strong engine otherwise. I don't know about its longevity.

The NG 900 is a very good car although the 1994 which was the first model
year suffered from childhood problems. When buying one of these take care
about: Power train: avoid the awful V6. Check the 4 cylinder engine for
virations, as some of them suffer from balance shaft transmission failures.
Check power train mounts especially the one at the transmission side that
wears at this age. Check for coolant leaks and coolant pump noise, as these
pumps created many problems. Check that the automatic transmission fluid is
red. Orange will indicate high milage and dark will indicate a very worn
transmission. Suspesions: Check for wear of the upper mounts of the front
Mcpherson struts. By this time they should be replaced preferably with the
later type mounts of the 9-3. Electrical system: Check for acid leaks around
the battery as they do occur on 900s. Check SID (Saab Info Display) for
'missng' rows. AC: Check for leaks on the high pressure hose (smaller
diameter) coming from the AC compressor. Ask the current owner if there was
any refrigirant leak from the evaporator, as replacing one is expensive.
Body: Check for seat cushion material on the carpet mainly under the driver's
seat. Check for cracks on the upper part of the dash panel at the place of
the passenger airbag.
